Col. Pete Kloeber, USAF (Ret), and his wife, Joyce, lead their MOAA chapter's program that supports local veterans and homeless veterans as well as the military community as a whole.

'We help [the veterans in supportive housing] out as much as we can, whether it's rent, car repair, even pets.'

Kloeber, who spent just under 33 years on active duty in civil engineering, and Joyce, a retired lieutenant colonel who served in the Air Force for 24 years, run the Grand Canyon (Ariz.) Chapter's effort to assist formerly homeless veterans who have been placed into housing by the Flagstaff, Ariz., VA Supportive Housing office. The chapter works to ensure these veterans can successfully stay in that housing by providing gift cards to purchase needed household items.

"We've been doing that ever since [2012]," Kloeber said. "That is our big project each year."

The chapter also works with the Supportive Housing office to provide services and assistance if a veteran needs anything.

"We help them out as much as we can, whether it's rent, car repair, even pets,"

he said, adding that they provide appliances, too.

The money to help comes from chapter member donations, along with Community Outreach Grants from The MOAA Foundation.

Kloeber, who is a national MOAA board member, and Joyce believe in The MOAA Foundation's work so much that they've put it in their will as a beneficiary.

During Kloeber's active duty career, he said he was so focused on the job at the time that he "didn't really do anything other than that."

"I didn't do anything in the community," he said, adding that once he retired, he wanted to do what he could to give back.

"I miss the military terribly, and so does my wife," Kloeber said. "I miss the people."

Helping to support the local military and veterans' community helps him stay connected to that part of his life.
