North Carolina has numerous claims to fame — “first in flight,” scenic mountains, and beautiful beaches. What may not immediately come to mind are the various opportunities to experience European-inspired elegance. The lovely historic estates in this state are not to be missed.

In Asheville, the Biltmore Estate was completed in 1895. Architect Richard Morris Hunt visited French Renaissance style chateaus throughout France and England to design this chateau-esque mansion. Of the 8,000 acres of grounds, over 30 of them are carefully tended gardens.

One of the many highlights is the Italian Garden, evoking ideations of Versailles with its statuary and reflecting ponds with koi and goldfish. Venture throughout the grounds, via nearly 22 miles of hiking trails or 20 miles of biking trails, or explore other trails on horseback or via carriage. There are flat, paved paths for leisurely strolls and dirt trails for more intense constitutions.

In New Bern, Tryon Palace was the colonial governor’s mansion. Built in the Georgian style by John Hawks and originally completed in 1770, most of the buildings were destroyed by a 1798 fire. However, it was restored to its former glory in 1959. Of the original estate, only one building remains — the stable. Tryon Palace showcases over 14 acres of lovely gardens — 12 gardens in total. One is the Wilderness Garden, which was designed to emulate a natural landscape and primarily features native American plants.

Discounts are available at the Biltmore and Tryon Palace by presenting your military ID.

NORTH CAROLINA FOODIE FACT: Looking for a luxurious setting to savor brunch, lunch, dinner, or drinks? RH Charlotte translates European-inspired elegance from a historic to contemporary setting at its rooftop restaurant. With its glass walls, the dining area feels like an airy greenhouse that also has a fountain, crystal chandeliers, marble tables, and Japanese boxwood hedging. When the walls are retracted, the space seamlessly blends into the outside.
