Whether you seek a beautiful winding drive or a stunning hike, Colorado’s Guanella Pass is a classic spot to explore the Rocky Mountains and hike one of the state’s 58 famous “fourteeners,” peaks exceeding 14,000 feet. A former burro trail, the now-paved byway offers 22 miles of gorgeous scenery, climbing to timberline with breathtaking views of Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans.
Guanella Pass, accessible from Georgetown, off Interstate 70, or Grant, via County Road 62, is open from Memorial Day weekend to the end of November, depending on weather. It’s a fantastic spot for summer hiking and camping and known for brilliant aspen in September and October.
A 3-mile hike from the trailhead takes you to the top of Mount Bierstadt, one of Colorado’s most popular “fourteeners,” or you can stop at a pullout to enjoy rushing streams, accessible with an easy stroll. Be prepared to pull out your camera for frequent wildlife sightings, including moose and bighorn sheep.
Nearby Georgetown is a quaint mountain town with cozy lodging, excellent restaurants, shops, and a historic train ride. For a unique vacation experience for runners and walkers, check out the downhill Slacker Half-Marathon and 4-mile relay, June 25, starting at 10,880 feet up and finishing at 8,500 feet in downtown Georgetown, a popular race for veterans, who receive a discounted registration rate.
“We wouldn’t be having races like this if it weren’t for veterans,” said race director Beth Luther. “Those freedoms we take for granted every day would not happen without those people doing what they do for us.”
COLORADO FOODIE FACT: Treat yourself to a great burger and craft brew on the creekside deck at Cooper’s on the Creek, an unpretentious upscale Georgetown restaurant that welcomes guests in hiking and camping gear. Owners Amanda and Ryan Cooper, grandchildren of WWII vets, offer a 5% military discount.
