MOAA members frequently ask our transition and career experts about the state of the economy – and what it means for the job market.
While our transition resources will assist servicemembers, retirees, veterans, and military spouses regardless of economic trends, MOAA uses several resources to keep tabs on the bigger picture – we actively engage with the Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Services, with talent and acquisition professionals from hundreds of companies nationwide, and with organizations such as the Hiring our Heroes and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF).

We also rely on executive search firms and recruiters, who share trends they see across industries and sectors. One of those trusted resources is Cmdr. Lee Cohen, USN (Ret), founder of Cohen Partners Strategic Military Placement. Cohen, who will host a March 28 MOAA webinar, said the big picture “is not so easy to predict right now.”
“Our economy is in a weird zone where it’s shrugging off big shocks (COVID, inflation, war, etc.),” Cohen added. “Some smart people were saying we’ll have a recession in 2024 … but that doesn’t look like it is going to happen. That’s not to say there’s nothing to worry about: high interest rates, a fragile financial system where money is nothing more than ledger entries in institutions, and monstrous federal debt.
“Yes, we recently suffered some major layoffs in Big Tech, but herd mentality drove those layoffs. For now and the foreseeable future, the job market is strong and has exceptional career opportunities for those transitioning servicemembers and veterans who are ambitious and who lean forward.”
On March 28, you can join Cohen for further insights into the job market – don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to hear more from someone who has been placing people in all sizes of companies since 1989. He will share insights he has gleaned from veterans who have progressed through their civilian careers at all types of corporations on how the size of the company may impact your job satisfaction, compensation, geographic stability, and promotion potential.
