Streamlining Access and Enhancing Security

The VA's decision to reduce the number of sign-in options comes in response to feedback from veterans seeking a more straightforward system. By consolidating to Login.gov and ID.me, the VA also ensures compliance with the latest federal security standards, safeguarding veterans' information and benefits.

Key Dates and Changes

  • Jan. 31, 2025: Veterans will no longer be able to use My HealtheVet user IDs and passwords to sign in. The My HealtheVet health portal will remain accessible, but users must adopt the new sign-in methods, Login.gov or ID.me.
  • Sept. 30, 2025: Veterans will no longer be able to use DS Logon usernames and passwords to log in.
  • New Requirements: Veterans will need to create accounts with either Login.gov or ID.me, using a unique email address and setting up multifactor authentication for added security.

Preparing for the Transition

Veterans are encouraged to create their Login.gov or ID.me accounts as soon as possible. Both platforms meet modern security standards and provide access to VA and other government services.

  • Login.gov: A government-provided account for accessing various services.
  • ID.me: A private account provider partnering with government and non-government organizations.

Steps to Secure Your Account

  1. Identity Verification: This one-time process ensures only you can create your sign-in account, preventing scammers from accessing your benefits.
  2. Multifactor Authentication (MFA): Set up an MFA method, such as an authenticator app, to receive a code each time you sign in, adding an extra layer of security.
