As the global pandemic rages on, can we imagine the future world of work?

For many, the everyday world of work has forever changed, arguably for the better. As more and more people opt for, and succeed at, various remote work options, MOAA and FlexJobs – a leader in the telework space for more than a decade – have a few tips for success.

MOAA recently hosted a career webinar highlighting remote work with guest presenters (and military spouses) Toni Frana and Cidnye Work of FlexJobs. Frana serves as a FlexJobs remote work advocate and has been coaching and supporting small business owners and job seekers at all career levels for over 16 years. Work serves as a FlexJobs career coach and has professional experience in higher education, meetings, and event management, as well as public relations and advertising.

Some of the best practices and key takeaways from that presentation are below; the webinar is available at this link for Premium and Life members.

Know Your Options

Understand the top career fields for flexible and remote work. These include:

  • Information technology and cyber
  • Sales and marketing
  • Project management
  • Medical and health care
  • Customer service
  • Accounting and finance
  • Education and training
  • Business development
  • Account management

Find Your Fit

When searching for your new position – MOAA’s Job Board is a great place to start – use keywords to narrow the field.

Some terms may be self-explanatory: “Telework,” “Telecommute,” “Virtual Work,” and “Remote Positions,” for example. Some companies may use “Home based” to distinguish between remote and in-office opportunities.

Other ways to find remote positions include seeking those “Available Nationwide” or offering “Digital Options” to prospective employees.

Build Your Skills

Invest in yourself: Expand your skill set in key telecommuting areas, such as:

  • Verbal and written communication
  • Familiarity with digital communication tools and technology
  • Time management in an online environment
  • Virtual office setup (instant messaging, video conferencing, file sharing)
