3 Tips (and a 56-Page Guide) to Help Military Spouses Find Career Success

By MOAA Staff

Military spouses are as diverse as their career paths, but they share some common challenges when it comes to finding and maintaining gainful employment. MOAA recognizes these unique challenges and is here to help.

Here are three quick tips for military spouses striving to keep a career on the move. Get many more detailed suggestions, networking tips, and links to other resources in MOAA’s 56-page Spouse Employment Guide, available for free download here.

1. Brand awareness. One of the keys to landing any position is to portray yourself as the best solution to your future employer needs. All of your self-marketing materials — cover letters, business cards, résumés, your LinkedIn profile — should align with your brand. A good brand:
  • Delivers your message clearly
  • Confirms your credibility
  • Motivates your audience
  • Generates loyalty
2. Get a mentor. American Corporate Partners (ACP) is now accepting applications from active duty spouses to take part in their first-ever spouse mentorship program. Learn more about the program here.

3. Use your network. Networking is a key factor in the hiring decision over 75% of the time. Need help building your business support team, or just want to talk to employers, experts, and fellow job-seekers about the process? MOAA has the perfect opportunity: All military and veteran spouses seeking career opportunities are highly encouraged to attend MOAA’s premier signature networking and hiring event on Sept. 19 at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Click here for more details, including how to register.
