1912 - 1988
Lorin Peter Garlinger enlisted in the Navy on 23 December 1930. He served on the battleship USS MARYLAND (BB-46) for four years and then extended for 2 years. He was discharged in 1936 as a Quartermaster 3rd Class and returned to the family farm in Michigan. In the fall of 1939, he re-enlisted as a Quartermaster 2nd Class and was eventually promoted to Chief Quartermaster. He also married Dorothy in 1939. He was commissioned an Ensign during WW II and served in destroyers in the Pacific Theatre. Following Lieutenant Commander Garlinger’s retirement in 1953, the Garlingers returned home to Michigan and worked their farm until his death 23 December, 1988. Upon Dorothy’s death six years later, her trust provided for scholarships in loving memory of her husband and his devotion to the U. S. Navy.
