During his naval career, he commanded the USS HARDHEAD (SS 365). The HARDHEAD was launched on December 12, 1943 and commissioned on April 18, 1944 under the command of Commander Fitzhugh McMaster. While in command, the USS HARDHEAD torpedoed and sank the Japanese light cruiser Natori (5170 tons) about 200 nautical miles east of Samar, Philippines on 18 August, 1944.

Captain McMaster was a leading author on the subject of military uniforms of the American Revolution.

Marjorie was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Edgar Francis and Helen (Granberry) Waterman.
She loved to research genealogy at the Connecticut Historical Society and at the Eldredge Public Library of Chatham, Massachusetts. She also enjoyed sailing, swimming, and gardening and kept beautiful grounds at her home in Hermon, Massachusetts.

The "CAPT Fitzhugh McMaster, USN Designated Scholarships" were established in his memory by his wife, Marjorie.

Captain and Mrs. McMaster believed in education for a better future. She sent a note to the MOAA Scholarship Fund stating "Rather than through warring, peace eventually will come through education and the discipline and understanding that come with it."
