Chapter Activities

The Star Fort MOAA Chapter holds 6 Member Meetings featuring guest speakers on topics relevant to the members. Surviving Spouses hold 6 meetings per year and there are 6 Board Meetings a year. A special Memorial Day meeting is held each May. In addition, the chapter supports 4 local JROTC programs and 1 ROTC program. The chapter collects money at each meeting for the Wreaths Across America and participated in the program held in Greenwood. Members also participate in the “Last Patrol” program and the annual Veterans’ Day Parade. The chapter also places American Flags on the graves of Veterans for Memorial Day. At our November Meeting we raised money which will be donated to the Veterans Center to provide backpacks filled with items needed by homeless veterans in the Greenwood area. Surviving Spouse did special cards for veterans in assisted living facilities.

Legislative Issues

The Star Fort MOAA Chapter supports the MOAA national legislative agenda on- line and through the newsletter. We send our newsletter to our State Representatives and Senators to keep them inform of our chapter meetings and activities. The chapter is active in supporting the South Carolina Veterans Coalition focusing on bills to help active duty and veteran’s issues by attending meetings, in person and/or on-line, where we are briefed on the SCVC efforts and where the bills are in process and how to move them through until signed in law. Last year we were able to have military retirement exempt from state income tax. We have contacted and meant with State Representatives and Senators to support this important effort.
