Renewing Students

Renewal Process

This is not the application process for new applicants.

The renewal process starts in January with the Online Renewal Form. The form must be completed by March 2, 2009 at NOON EST. A packet will be mailed to students in January. The packet contains a reminder for official transcripts and the required Renewal Information Confirmation sheet. Please read the renewal letter carefully and send in the official transcript showing coursework through Fall 2008, Information Confirmation Sheet postmarked by March 31, 2009.  The renewal paperwork should be sent back to:

Educational Assistance Program of MOAA
Attn: TRN
201 N Washington St
Alexandria, VA 22314

Failure to renew will result in the student being removed from the program and placed into repayment status.

Disbursements

The loan is given in two disbursements each year -- one in early August and the second in mid-December. The money is electronically deposited into a bank account of your choice. A Deposit Authorization Form is mailed to students in January with the renewal packet. If you have misplaced the form, you can download the form by clicking on the link above. (To download the form, you must either have or install the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.)

The total amount of the loan for the 2009-2010 school year is $5,500.

Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements

Students must remain in good standing with their university in order to stay in the program. For most academic institutions, good standing is a 2.0 GPA or above. A 3.0 GPA is required to apply, but it is not required to maintain a loan unless the school considers probation to be less than a 3.0 GPA.

Grants

There are two types of grants students can receive while in the program: Senior Grants and Designated Scholarships.

Senior Grants are divided into three categories: The Margaret P. Crozier Memorial Fund, The Cosby/Mason Memorial Scholarship Grant Fund, and Special Grants. Both are only designated for students in their final year of undergraduate study. Juniors are mailed a separate application in January to apply for a grant; there is one application for all grants. The Crozier, Mason grants, and Special Grants are $5,000. Selected students will receive either a Senior Grant, a Crozier Grant, or a Mason Grant. Those who apply but are not selected for a Senior Grant still will receive the interest-free loan provided they follow the renewal process.

Designated Scholarships are awarded in July. Students are automatically considered and notified if selected. MOAA does not send a notice if a student is not selected. A student receives this in conjunction with the loan. The award is a $5,000 interest-free loan and a $500 grant, which takes the place the $5,500 interest free loan. Students selected are responsible for writing their donors and thanking them for the award. Specific donor contact information can be found by calling (800) 234-6622, ext. 816, or by e-mailing edassist@moaa.org.

Leave of Absence

If a student leaves school for any amount of time or for any reason, that student must contact MOAA by calling (800) 234-6622, ext. 816, or by e-mailing edassist@moaa.org to discuss his or her loan status.
